Last week I spent a couple of days in the Maurienne Valley, Savoy, France, on assignment for Getty Images, where I shot the building site of the Lyon-Turin high speed railway (aka TELT, Tunnel Euralpin Lyon Turin). Since its initial planning in the 1990's, it has encountered opposition from residents of the towns along its path, particularly in Italy, home to the No TAV (Treno Alta Velocita’) protest movement. The project is supported by Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini and his League party, but is strongly opposed by the coalition government's ruling party, Five Star Movement (M5S).
The dispute is among the many issues threatening to collapse Italy's governing coalition.
