BERGAMO FROM THE NIGHTMARE TO THE DREAM

Italy's northern city of Bergamo is a weeping symbol of the coronavirus pandemic: Since late February, Bergamo and its province has reported over 14,000 coronavirus cases, with more than 3,000 proven deaths (which could rise too 6,000 if compared to the average of deaths registered over the same period in recent years).

footage of Italian army trucks ferrying coffins away to be incinerated had made global headlines as the city’s crematorium was overwhelmed with coronavirus victims.

According to sample-based research, up to 45% of residents in the area have come in touch with the virus.

Last week I worked in Bergamo together with Jérôme Gautheret, Italy’s correspondent of the French newspaper Le Monde, who wrote an article on the relationship between the city and its football team, Atalanta.

Atalanta dazzled before the pandemic halted football in March, bending Valencia 8-4 on aggregate to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in its history. Now it has the chance to turn an unthinkable nightmare into an impossible dream.
